Well Testing

This page provides an overview of the Subpart W reporting requirements for the well testing source type.

Please see Reporting Form Instructions on downloading the blank reporting form and uploading the completed reporting form.
You may also refer to Optional Calculation Spreadsheet Instructions to download the Subpart W calculation spreadsheet.

The well testing source type is applicable to Onshore petroleum and natural gas production facilities (98.230(a)(2)).

Indicate if the facility has the source type via the radio buttons.

If the source type is present you must report required elements.

If the facility has the source type, then indicate whether missing data procedures were used.

Reporting Requirements

Table L.1 Well testing emissions must be completed by all facilities with well testing subject to reporting under 98.232. Required data include:

  • Equation used to calculate annual volumetric natural gas emissions?
    • If W-17A, provide the following information:
      • Average Gas to Oil Ratio (GOR) for Wells Tested (cubic feet of gas per barrel of oil) (98.236(l)(1)(iv), 98.236(l)(2)(iv))
      • Average flow rate for well(s) tested (barrels of oil per day)  (98.236(l)(1)(v), 98.236(l)(2)(v)) (unless subject to 2-year delay in reporting)
    • If W-17B, provide the following information:
      • Average annual production rate for well(s) tested (cubic feet per day) ([98.236(l)(3)(iv), 98.236(l)(4)(iv)) (unless subject to 2-year delay in reporting)
  • Were well testing emissions vented or flared? (98.236(l))
    • If vented, provide the following information:
      • Total CO2 emissions from venting (mt CO2) (98.236(l)(1)(vi), 98.236(l)(3)(v))
      • Total CH4 emissions from venting (mt CH4) (98.236(l)(1)(vii), 98.236(l)(3)(vi))
    • If flared, provide the following information:
      • Total CO2 emissions from flaring (mt CO2) (98.236(l)(2)(vi), 98.236(l)(4)(v))
      • Total CH4 emissions from flaring (mt CH4) (98.236(l)(2)(vii), 98.236(l)(4)(vi))
      • Total N2O emissions from flaring (mt N2O) (98.236(l)(2)(viii), 98.236(l)(4)(vii))
  • Number of wells tested in calendar year (98.236(l)(1)(i), 98.236(l)(2)(i), 98.236(l)(3)(i)], 98.236(l)(4)(i))

  • Average number of days wells were tested (98.236(l)(1)(iii), 98.236(l)(2)(iii), 98.236(l)(3)(iii), 98.236(l)(4)(iii))

  • Are the only wells used to calculate "flow rates" or "production rates" wildcat or delineation wells subject to a 2-year delay in reporting? (98.236(l)(1)(v), 98.236(l)(2)(v), 98.236(l)(3)(iv), 98.236(l)(4)(iv))
    • If yes, reporting for Annual flow rate (W-17A) and Average annual production rate (W-17B) can be omitted
  • Is GOR (for W-17A) or production rate (for W-17B) reported on an actual or standard basis? (98.236)

  • Temperature used to calculate GOR or production rate (oF) (98.236)
  • Pressure used to calculate GOR or production rate (psi) (98.236)

Table L.2 Missing data procedures used for Well Testing emission calculations is required if your facility relied on missing data procedures to develop data elements used in calculating emissions for Well Testing. Please report the following:

  • Parameters
  • Equation used to calculate annual volumetric natural gas emissions
  • Were well testing emissions vented or flared?
  • Measurement Frequency
  • Number of quarters missing data procedures were used [98.236(bb)(1)] (required only if the measurement frequency was quarterly)

  • Total number of hours in the year missing data procedure was used [98.3(c)(8)], [98.236(bb)(2)] (required unless the measurement frequency was quarterly, annually, biannually, or N/A)
  • Procedures used for missing data [98.235(h)]

Table L.3 Delayed RY2015 Data for Well Testing (for delays claimed in RY2015) should be completed if data reporting were delayed in 2015 due to reliance solely on wildcat or delineation well properties. Required data elements include:

  • Equation used to calculate annual volumetric natural gas emissions? [98.236(l)]
  • Average flow rate for oil well(s) tested and emissions are not vented to a flare (barrels per day) [98.236(l)(1)(v)] (formerly (l)(1)(iv))
  • Average flow rate for oil well(s) tested and emissions are vented to a flare (barrels per day) [98.236(l)(2)(v)] (formerly (l)(2)(iv))
  • Average annual production rate for gas well(s) tested and emissions are not vented to a flare (cubic feet per day) [98.236(l)(3)(iv)] (formerly (l)(3)(iii))
  • Average annual production rate for gas well(s) tested and emissions are vented to a flare (cubic feet per day) [98.236(l)(4)(iv)] (formerly (l)(4)(iii))
  • Was production rate based on actual or standard conditions? [98.236]
  • Temperature used to calculate the annual production rate [98.233]
  • Pressure used to calculate the annual production rate (psi) [98.233]
  • Well ID Number(s) [98.236(l)(v), (2)(v), (3)(iv), and (4)(iv)]

Well-Specific Information - In addition to completing Tables L.1 - L.3, as appropriate, complete Table AA.1.iii with well-specific activity data for each well testing (Tab (aa)(1) Onshore Production in the Smart Form), as described at Onshore Production Facility Level Requirements.

Total Emissions

The total emissions roll-up at the top of the sheet reflects the sum of each gas emission reported for the source type. These summations are calculated automatically by the Smart Form and tabulated on the Introduction tab.
